Hi I'm new to Segment and more on the business development than code end of things - so we have a CPG client that is selling on Amazon and can't extract any customer data. is there anyway that Segment can solve this problem and do you know if Amazon will let you place tags within the brands' store pages?

This is actually a very good question, and not stupid at all. Sadly, however, Amazon does not offer any sort API we can access to extract that data on your behalf; nor do they allow any sort of custom code injection for tracking on their store page. If they did - you could just plug in Segment and some analytics destinations to gain those insights, potentially.
Seems customers have been wanting this since at least 2015, as per this Amazon post where users want to get this data into GA: https://sellercentral.amazon.com/forums/t/is-it-possible-to-track-my-amazon-store-with-google-analytics/69281/15.
It does seem, however, that they've just released (Q1 2018) something called Amazon Stores Insights, which may give you some of the info you need. Please note: I am not an Amazon stores expert:)
