Facebook Pixel Ecommerce Data Mapping

From reading https://segment.com/docs/destinations/facebook-pixel/#standard-events I can understand that if we implement https://segment.com/docs/spec/ecommerce/v2/ as our ecommerce events that they will automatically be mapped to facebook's specific events.

However what I'm not sure of is whether or not the properties of each event are mapped to FB's properties. According to https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1549524211985335?helpref=faq_content and https://developers.facebook.com/docs/facebook-pixel/implementation/conversion-tracking/#standard-events we need content_ids, content_type, and contents passed with our ecommerce events but these aren't attributes on Segments documentation. So I'm curious if other properties like `products`, `product_id`, or `sku` are mapped to these values?

And this may be a little out of scope but does this happen for other destinations that use these ecommerce events? If we implement  our events according to segment's events how do we know which value is mapped to the corresponding value for a given destination?

  • Hey  James Russo !

Yes! If you are going to implement our ecommerce spec, some events will be mapped to Facebook Pixel automatically. There are only six events we will automatically map which can be found here; any other event that you send to us, you will need to define whether you want that mapped as a standard event, otherwise any event that is not mapped will be sent to Facebook as a custom event. When you implement our ecommerce spec, you will want to follow it closely because that is how we are going to map events to any downstream destinations you have enabled based on their specifications. Just keep in mind that each destination has its own unique needs, so some might need more mapping than others since each destination works differently.

As for the properties, you are going to have to include each of those yourself based on the documentation of the destination you are sending the events to. Any property that you send to us, we will forward to Facebook Pixel.

Hopefully this answers your question, otherwise please don't hesitate to reach out!
